The tale of Wind Energy - By Aditya Raj Singh Udawat
“As yet, the wind is untamed, and unharnessed force; and quite possibly one of the greatest discoveries hereafter to be made will be the taming, and harnessing of it”. It’s a famous quote said by Abraham Linkoln telling about the mightiness and future of wind energy.
Wind power or wind energy is the use of wind to provide mechanical power through wind turbines to turn electric generators and traditionally to do other work, like milling or pumping. Wind power is sustainable and renewable energy and has a much smaller impact on the environment compared to burning fossil fuels. About 2% of the heat of the Sun received by the Earth gets converted into wind energy which finally generates electricity by the use of a windmill.
Wind energy is renewable and sustainable. It’s free of cost. It creates no pollution and hence it is good for the environment. It has a benefit that it can give power to remote locations where there is no reach of electricity.
As we know that good and bad go hand in hand with each other. The main disadvantage of wind energy is that wind turbines are costly and wind energy fluctuates too much. They also are a threat to wildlife and are very noisy. But considering both advantages, wind energy has the majority in advantages which make it more usable.
Today our Earth is facing an energy crisis. By 2050 the demand for energy could double or even triple as the global population grows and developing countries expand their economies. Coal and natural gas-burning power plants release tonnes and tonnes of CO2 which causes the greenhouse effect and thus eventually causes heating of Earth. Energy is essential for economic and social development and also poses an environmental challenge. When the winds of change blow some people build walls while others build a windmill. We have to clear those people who are building walls in the path to sustainability.
So we must fulfil our energy needs and simultaneously take care of our Mother Earth; this is possible when we move towards “Green Power”. In the green power sources wind, energy is the most reliable and effective source of power. We have a huge knowledge to change to green power but knowledge is not power, implementation is power. The future depends on what we do in the present. Tomorrow is too late, yesterday is over and now is exactly the right moment to start
